Fruit Highlights in Retailers – wk 05

This week, the stand-out fruit in most stores are blood oranges and Navel oranges; Nadorcott mandarins; Sable black grapes; and FlavorKing plums.

On browsing various individual retailers, most have additional tasty options which are highlighted below and well worth trying if you see them:

ASDA:

Oranges: Shamouti from Israel – the original ‘Jaffa’ orange, and very tasty.

Blood Oranges: Sanguine from Morocco.

Grapes: The plump, sweet, seeded Red Globe from South Africa is a great alternative.

Tropical Exotics: The bigger stores have a good range: Nam Dok Mae, the favourite mango of Thailand – delicious; Cherimoya from Spain; Rambutan from Vietnam; Dragon Fruit from Israel; Yellow Passion Fruit from Kenya.

Bananas: Baby Bananito from Costa Rica.

LIDL:

Pears: Italy’s favourite, the Abate Fetel, is consistently available in Lidl as a loose pear.

M&S:

Mandarins: Tangold and Nadorcott are very good.

Oranges: Tarocco blood oranges from Sicily – among the best.

Plums: Well worth trying are the range of plums, including Elizabeth and FlavorKing from South Africa – delicate and tasty.

Bananas: Baby Bananito from Costa Rica – should be sweet.

MORRISONS:

Oranges: Tarocco blood oranges from Sicily – among the best.

SAINSBURY’S:

Blood Oranges: Tarocco from Sicily and Sanguine from Morocco.

Pears: Italy’s favourite, the Abate Fetel, is one of the more flavoursome pears, and is lovely to eat when crisp.

Grapes: The plump, sweet, seeded Red Globe from Peru is a great alternative.

Mango: Organic Kent from Peru has a good flavour.

TESCO:

Mango: Air-freighted Peruvian Kent, are a cut above the current sea-freighted offer.

Oranges: Tarocco blood oranges from Sicily – among the best.

Pears: The only retailer selling blushed Sweet Sensation, very similar to delicious Comice.

WAITROSE:

Oranges: Ippolito Tarocco blood oranges from Sicily are wonderful: get them while they last.

Pears: Italy’s favourite, the Abate Fetel, is one of the more flavoursome pears, and is lovely when eaten crisp.
