Mango World Cup
Costa Rica Keitt vs. India Kesar – 2:3
Both very pleasing, with Kesar winning on flavour!
Indian Kesar are still available in Morrisons, Tesco and Asda, and at independent Asian grocery stores, by the box. Also now available in the independent stores are the wonderfully sweet Sindhri mangoes from Pakistan, which will also start to appear in some supermarkets as the Indian Kesar stocks diminish.
Keitt is a later season mango, so, as such, tends to be sold at a better stage of maturity, as we’ve experienced with the Costa Rican fruit. The difference between Mali Kent, with an earlier season, has been quite stark. The Mali fruit on sale in some stores has evidently been harvested slightly too early and doesn’t ripen beyond a sort of rubbery sweetness which is quite unsatisfying: if only the growers could be encouraged to leave the fruit on the trees a bit longer!
