Grapes are a real mixture at the moment as retailers wait for the Mediterranean season to get properly underway. Quality is mixed as much of the offer is tail-end of season from South America and India. On the whole, the actual berries should be fine, but often the stems are dried and there is a sense of tiredness to the fruit.
If you want to buy grapes, the freshest are from Egypt: red Flame, and white Early Sweet and Prime are now in some stores and give a real ‘new season’ taste sensation, sometimes a little tangy: this will pass with time.
Otherwise red grapes are mostly from Chile (e.g. Scarlotta and Crimson); black grapes from Chile, Mexico and Brazil (e.g. Vitoria); and white grapes from India (e.g. Thompson), Chile, Peru and Brazil.
